Tony La Tigre dies of old age!
This bowl's for you Tony!
It was a sad day in Battle Creek, Michigan today as the Kellog g Corporation lost a faithful pitchman after more than 50 years of service. Tony the Tiger has passed away. He was in his early 90's. I've gotta tell ya, I cried in my Corn Flakes and sobbed in my Sugar Smacks when I heard the sad news. The guy that did the famous "They're Grrrrreat!" was pretty much locked into a lifelong contract with the cereal giant. Sure, he did other stuff most noteably, sang the song "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch" in the holiday classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". I didn't know that piece of trivia until today. I always thought Boris Karloff sang the song! I must admit, I became a little angry at the old bird for taking away half the sugar from Frosted Flakes and still charging the same price as a regular box, maybe even a little higher. The good times had to come to an end I guess when all I have now are memories of Saturday mornings and the big blue box on the table with "Hong Kong Phooey" and "AWA Wrestling" on the tube. Tony also rewarded me with gifts for filling my bowl to the top and sometimes pouring a second one. At the bottom of the box was always the nifty little prize like the submarine you filled with baking soda, or most recently, DVD's of some really bad movies from the 80's. I've since moved onwards to "Tony the Tiger's Cinnammon Krunchers", a delightful treat! Today I found a CD-ROM inside my box that lets me get interactive with Tony on my computer. It will be odd to hear the famous voice which by the way, the man was never allowed to do anywhere other than the commercials for Kellogg's. The man who did the voice is dead, but Tony will live on with a new voice. It will be hard to not notice they aren't the same. It's kind of like when they tried to pull a fast one on Barney Rubble and pretend that no one would catch on. Now it's time for Toucan Sam to step up to the plate and fill Tony's shoes. I hereby make the switch to "Froot Loops" effective immediately. THAT'S the way I see it!
