"America...what a country!"
Too bad there wasn't any news on television today...Oh yeah, there was. Today will actually go down in history right next to the 1960's Chicago riots, the Rodney King verdict that spawned the L.A. riots aand the "Million Man March". So, what's todays Immigration Rally all about? It's that America is a land of opportunity and a nice place to work and send your paychecks back to the old country and not have to pay income tax! I don't know who started the ball rolling with this rally. Was it one person's idea or a group? What was only supposed to be a Chicago event spread like wildfire from coast to coast, and luckily Chicago's ABC7 Newscopter was brought off the helipad to film the whole thing in streaming video and on HDTV. The curiosity got the best of me this afternoon as I had both the HDTV station and streaming video on. The first photo above is what I viewed for an hour. Just a helicopter hovering over the crowd as the group moved from one place to another. It's true that this couuntry was built on immigrants that passed through Ellis Island in New York and got off the boat to start a new life here...that's history. I don't recall any success stories from people walking through the desert and hopping over razor wire fences, running from attack dogs and dodging search lights. The success stories all come from those who passed through New York with the exception of the people that knocked down the towers in New York. The truth of the matter is, we don't need anymore busboys, dishwashers, or landscapers. While people are protesting to stay here, corporations are moving to places like Mexico because most places pay 50 cents a day whereas over here the same worker gets paid $18 an hour to do the same thing. Maybe we should boycott places like General Motors and Ford for moving some of their operations away. Thanks to the media today, immigrants were reminded it would be a good idea if they didn't go to school or work and join the rally. That's OK by me, I don't need to eat Mexican, Chinese, Italian and so on...while these people marched in the rain, I enjoyed the good old American hot dog for dinner. This is what immigration has given to us in the last half of the 20th Century: Treasures such as comedian Yakov Smirnoff, Cheech Marin, and George Lopez. Sure, these guys are naturalized citizens in 2006, but if there's room enough on the pickup truck or boat for these three, they should ship thim back too!
