AUTHOR: Dave Sypniewski DATE: Sunday, September 18, 2005 ----- BODY: Nah, this isn't about Mexican Independence Day that happened last Friday, or even the other one that Mexican-Americans refer to as "Cinco de Mayo" however, for years there's always been jokes about how drinking the water in Mexico would involve at least one of your vacation days there being spent sitting on the toilet. In fact, if that really is the truth, you'd still be in better shape than a glass of water taken from a faucet in New Orlean's. So WHY is the Mayor of N.O. telling the "evacuees" that it's safe to come home? Not only that. This guy is also inviting tourists to come and visit...HUH? Come home? Come and Visit? Visit WHAT? As it turns out, the Mayor is more interested in getting the local economy rolling than cleaning up the place. The first people invited back within the next week include bar owners, nightclub owners, and shopkeepers, as well as musicians. Power is gradually getting turned back on, on places like Bourbon Street. I ask, what kind of idiot would take a trip down there to party and have a good time? Where would you stay? And considering the water isn't safe not only for drinking but, showering, cooking, or basically any human contact, forget about the people looking for a place to party...what about the people that live there and are now being lured back to whatever is left of their homes? I had heard weeks ago that even bottled water that was either purchased or stolen that made any contact with the floodwaters was risky to drink without boiling it in a pot first. Many of those who are taking the offer to come back are only going there to see what's left before relocating to a "safer place" like Atlanta. Afterall, nearly 100,000 homes will be bulldozed. I say, why should anyone go back? Most people displaced by Katrina are living life better than ever now. By coming up to the midwest, everything is free such as: hearing aids, eyeglasses, medical care, the $2,000 free debit card and food, housing, clothing, and even college tuition. The complaint down there is that the cleanup is moving too slow...they're right. Nevermind the bars and restaurants. Fix the water problem! The longer it takes, the longer these people will take advantage of everything they're receiving up here! Personally, I'm already growing tired of hearing all the sad stories. C'mon, who's kidding who? Life is good. You might say that to these folks, Katrina was the best thing that could have happened...a blessing in disguise, an opportunity. THAT'S the way I see it today! -------- Squealing Pig WORLDWIDE!: The drinking water in Mexico isn't really that bad afterall!
