20 years and still going...Farm Aid 2005
Everything in the world has a lifespan, including that hard working John Deere tractor out yonder in the field. You get about 20 years use out of it before it starts making it's final puffs of smoke and goes kaputz. In my opinion, this is the case with the annual "Farm Aid" concert which celebrates 20 glorious years tomorrow here at Tinley Park's Tweeter Center. What started out as a big deal for helping farmers with a good dose of Country and Western, has almost transformed into a big campaign for N.O.R.M.L. (National Orginization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). Heck, over the years some of the performers have included Dave Matthews, Blues Traveller, The Black Crowes, Kid Rock, and of course, the three amigos who founded the thing: Nelson, John Melloncamp, and Neil Young. Anyone within a five mile radius of tomorrow's daylong concert is subject to getting a second hand high. Neil Young will sing "Harvest Moon", and Widespread Panic will sing "I can't get high". So what started out as helping the farmers in the 1980's in the midwest where it wasn't raining and farmers corn and wheat crops were dying, has become help for the stuff trying to grow deep within the caorn and wheat fields. Well, here we are in 2005 and once again, barely a drop of rain in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. I'm not so sure about ticket prices for this show however, the one thing I do know is that all the money in the world isn't going to make it rain. There's no need for a Farm Aid to go any further than the one this year but maybe in addition to all the blues, bluegrass inspired country rock, they should have a tribe of Indians dance for rain..and you know what you get when that happens? A wet Willie! Ewwww!
