Johnny B. on the loose, or on a noose?
There's always been a bit of truth to the rumor that athletes in Chicago get their start here before they get traded away, and then return here with Metamucill in hand for one "last hurrah" before shipping off to the retirement home to play shuffleboard. Such is the case with some radio personalities mainly, Jonathan Brandmeier. No, he didn't die. He's just been soaking up the sun in L.A. waiting for the phone to ring. Matter of fact, he's been waiting for over a year after his radio station realized his style is older than the parachute pants and Miami Vice sportcoats hanging in his closet! Well, someone finally gave Johnny B. a jingle and it was none other than his old bosses at "The Loop." Like it or not, it looks like he's coming back to Chicago. Maybe this time will last a little longer than his last gig in Chicago when he was too stubborn to get away from the California sun and did his show via satellite from out there. It was doomed from the start as they put him on right after Howard Stern on WCKG. Now a lot of changes are coming...too many to mention however, Chicago radio is about to be shook up like a snow globe. California treated Johnny good for a while. While out there he managed to carry four hours on the air everyday, television specials, and voiceover work for NBC. He made so much money he probably paid cash for his home in Malibu! The only reason he's not back here already is because in his mind he thinks he's still got market value and he's playing hardball to work out a deal "on his terms." I for one, am not ready for a second helping of nonsense. I'm willing to bet that Johnny's show is still stuck in 1985. Who could forget (or I should say, remember) Johnny B's beer commercials for Bud Light? Spuds Mackenzie ended up the bigger star. How about "Johnny B. on the Loose", his TV show that aired a few times? Remember "We're all crazy in Chicago" playing in your cassette player? He still insists that he wasn't ripping off Huey Lewis and The News with that act. God help us all if he brings that baggage back here with him. If the deal falls through, maybe he can hook up with Larry Lujack and Tommy Edwards who thought they were in a position to negotiate when they came back to town. So where are those two now? On some AM station to the far right of the dial that you have to jiggle the antenae in order to hear. Maybe Johnny was right...if we welcome back the 1980's again, we really are "all crazy in Chicago!"
