"Queen for a year..."
Brian May and Roger Deacon join Paul Rodgers (center) for a Queen reunion. What would Freddie Mercury say about that?
It was around Christmas when logged on to the computer and decided to look up Brian May from Queen's website to see if he had any new projects in the works. I was shocked to read a letter of his stating that Queen is getting back together for a tour and later this year, may head into the studio to record a new album. The last record of original songs as a group was 1991's "Innuendo." Not too long after it's release, lead singer Freddie Mercury announced he had AIDS and didn't know how much time he had left. A week after that, Freddie died...that quick. That was the end of Queen. Now the boys in the band won't be the first to tell you that in that year, they were riding high in popularity. "Wayne's World" was out, and their song "Bohemian Rhapsody" made it to #1 for the second time since 1975. When Freddie died, their catalogue of music lived in through a bunch of incarnations and "greatest hits" CD's. I should know. I have all their CD's except for about two. Then the re-issued all their music in the 1990's to include bonus tracks. You see how much $$$$ they managed to pull in? This is as bad as The Beatles and Elvis for crying out loud! So, when I read that they were getting together, I wondered "how?" Were they going to dig up Freddie's bones? Nope. This is where Paul Rodgers comes in.
Paul is best known for his work in the 70's group "Bad Company." They were actually discovered by and signed to Led Zeppelin's label. Around 1980, Paul left the group. A year later, Paul came back, then he left again. Finally, in 2000 Bad Company reunited with him to record four new songs for a "Best of" thing. They were going to make a new album but Paul, you guessed it, quit again. In between, Paul was in The Firm...he quit the band. Paul was in The Law...he quit that too. Now these guys call him up. Sorry boys, you want to play together? Fine. But don't call yourself Queen. What would Freddie have to say about that? How long before Paul quits? How many people are willing to dish out $75 for a ticket? Once again, greed wins. On Brian May's website he was quick to point out that Freddie would love it. As far as the name goes, he said, "It's only a name." Yes, it is that's why you're not hitting the road under a new name. Who would pay that kind of money to see "Paul Rodgers and Friends?" Hopefully Paul Rodgers quits before they get started. Let Queen rest in peace...PLEASE!
